When it comes to our expenses, it can be easy to forget how the little things add up. That one cup of coffee or small bottle of shampoo might not seem costly in the moment, but tally up how much you shell out for these things in a year and you might be surprised. Did you know that a woman, on average, can spend up to P950,000 for her period over an entire lifetime? (Granted, the study that shows that was done for American women, so the expenses for Pinays might differ… but still!)
On top of that, many of the things we buy either consist of, or are packaged in, unsustainable, non-biodegradable toxic materials. As a result, the toothbrush you’ve been using for three months will likely end up in a landfill somewhere, or floating in the ocean, or disintegrated into microplastics that get into our air and drinking water.

We’re in a pickle. Forests are burning, the ice caps are melting, and by 2050 there’ll be more garbage in the sea than fish. At the same time though, it’s a double-edged sword! You do need certain things in order to survive as well as enjoy your life. To completely forego using sanitary products while on your period, or stop shampooing your hair altogether, would simply be unrealistic for many people.
Fortunately, there are ways to save up while also being eco-friendly. Companies have been developing more sustainable products to fit into our modern lifestyles without breaking the bank. Those eco-friendly items also tend to be made out of more natural or sustainable material, are longer-lasting, and are suitable for using over and over again—significantly reducing your waste output. You don’t need to be all or nothing with your approach towards either saving money or living a more sustainable lifestyle—the little things add up here, too (but in a good way)!

We’ve done the math and have found how you can save anywhere between P5,000 up to over P26,000 a year (the latter depending on how willing you are to forego cafe-bought coffee for the home brewed variety), just by swapping out a few of your everyday products for some sustainable items! (The best part? Reward yourself for reducing your contribution to waste by putting that money into something worthwhile—like a vacation out of town or a class you’ve been curious to try out!)
