Acids can do amazing things for your skin—when they’re used the right way. But a common mistake even the best of us make is applying way too much of them, way too often, usually in an effort to quickly correct dark spots or stop breakouts. It may work for you, but doing so has likely damaged or over-exfoliated your moisture barrier in the process, especially if you use concentrated amounts. As a safe bet, acids should be used only once every other day at most.
And if you’ve been doing more than that—well, you could probably use what we’re about to say. Below, see 4 skincare practices that’ll reverse the damage and strengthen your moisture barrier back to health.
1. SWITCH TO A LOW PH CLEANSER
If your skin is feeling extra sensitive or inflamed, the last thing you want to do is use a harsh cleanser. Instead, switch to a low pH formula. Since they’re less acidic, they won’t strip away your skin’s natural moisture, and will provide thorough cleansing while still being gentle on delicate skin.

2. LAYER HYDRATING TONERS
Like we always say—when it comes to repairing damage, moisture is king. One of the most effective ways to keep your skin hydrated is to layer light, essence-like toners (think 7-Skin Method). All you have to do is apply one layer, allow it to absorb, then repeat up to a minimum of three layers. By layering a light hydrator instead of using one thick cream, your skin is able to better absorb product and maximize its moisturizing effects.

3. APPLY SHEET MASKS AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN
In the spirit of maximizing moisture, sheet masks are an easy and instant way to boost hydration in your routine. While any sheet mask will do, look for formulas that contain more intensive healing ingredients—propolis, hyaluronic acid, snail mucin, and the like. There’s no limit to how many times you can use a sheet mask, whether that’s twice a day or once a week. The more, the better!

4. SEAL EVERYTHING IN WITH A SLEEPING MASK
Lastly, make the most out of your entire routine by capping everything of with an occlusive sleeping mask. These formulas act as occlusives that seal in every layer of skincare you’ve applied, while adding another layer of hydration. It’s basically the cherry on top of your nighttime regimen. By sealing everything in, it ensures that all your products stay put and properly work their restorative magic as you sleep.
