About Brushes

Choosing the right makeup for you is one thing. Selecting the right set of makeup brushes is another. With the many choices available today on BeautyMNL, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. Hence, here are some tips to help you find the right ones for your face:

  1. Do you really need a set? It’s very tempting to buy an entire set of makeup brushes. However, if you’re just an average user, you don’t really need to own a 26-piece set.
While most recommendations fall into the 7 to 8-brush range, it ultimately depends on the type of makeup you use. For starters, those 7 pieces include one for foundation, one for blush, one for brows, one for concealer, two for eyeshadow and one for the lips. But if you just use a tinted moisturizer instead of foundation, you can just use your fingers to apply it instead. Or if you use an eyebrow pencil, you won’t need a brow brush as well.

  2. Natural or synthetic? Now that you’ve narrowed down the kinds of brushes you actually need, you can now focus on the next criteria—the brush bristles. First is the natural kind, which are made from animal hair such as goat, squirrel, or sable. These are best suited for applying powders, blushes, and bronzers as they make it easy for you to blend colors on the face.
Meanwhile, the synthetic or artificial ones are made from nylon or polyester. There are also newer materials such as Taklon (tipped polyester), Natrafil, and Tafre. They are better suited for liquid makeup as they don’t get clumpy and use less product. Meanwhile, they are also the best choice for vegetarian or vegan makeup mavens, as they don’t use any animal byproduct.

  3. Handles. Wood is still the preferred material for makeup brushes, as it offers the user better control. However, there are also metal or plastic ones available today.
